On August 12 Kuwait – along with the rest of the world – celebrated International Youth Day at a small ceremony at the National Library of Kuwait. Among those in attendance was Minister of Information and Minister of State for Youth Affairs Sheikh Salman Al Sabah, who reaffirmed Kuwait’s desire to give the youth a greater role in society.

The United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon made a brief visit to the State of Kuwait on Monday to meet with His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah and First Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah Al Khaled Al Hamad Al Sabah.

UNDP Kuwait hosted recently a five-day workshop for the winners of the Sheikh Mubarak Al Hamad Al Sabah Award for Journalistic Excellence, which was initiated by UNDP Kuwait’s Programme Analyst Huda AlDakheel at the request of the Sheikh Mubarak Awards Committee in order to assist a number of award-winning journalists in advancing the nature of their work and building their capacity to motivate and stimulate their commitment to improving the role of media in Kuwait, especially when addressing national and key development issues.

KUWAIT, May 2014 – Head of Gender and Social Development at UNDP Kuwait Ms. Sahar Shawa was selected as Gender Net Community Member of the Month. Shawa’s diligent efforts in the areas of women’s empowerment, women’s rights, and gender equality and mainstreaming have earned her high praise and brought recognition and visibility to the work being done by UNDP Kuwait’s CO. Shawa is only the third female ever to be profiled from the Arab region, and the first in the Gulf.

Today, the world celebrates the 6th International Day for Democracy under the slogan “Strengthening Voices for Democracy.” On November 2007, the General Assembly proclaimed 15 September as the International Day of Democracy. This day provides an opportunity to highlight the centrality of this universal core value and to review the state of democracy in the world. Democracy is as much a process as a goal, and only with the full participation of and support by the international community, national governing bodies, civil society and individuals, can the ideal of democracy will be realized.

In 2012, the Government of the State of Kuwait agreed to support United Nations activities through the direct funding of 10 Junior Professional Officer (JPOs) posts. After a rigorous selection process, 10 young Kuwaitis were deployed to UNDP offices in duty stations including New York, Barbados, Copenhagen and Istanbul. Several months into their assignments, the JPOs have already experienced new challenges and the excitement of creating a new professional life for themselves in diverse surroundings.

Glad to be among the youth of SOK although it’s a long time since I was one of you. According to UNICEF, youth ends at 24 or at 32 if you are applying for the Young Professional Program in the UN or in the World Bank. Anyway, memories from youth are still fresh in my mind and always will be. So I am really grateful to the organizers and you all for giving me this opportunity and to feel young again, at least while I am here.

UNDP Kuwait conducts "Training Of Trainers For Building National Capacities On Human/Women's Rights And Legal Empowerment In Kuwait"
The United Nations Development Programme in Kuwait has successfully completed the “Training of Trainers for Building National Capacities on Human / Women’s Rights and Legal Empowerment in Kuwait.” The series of events took place at the Women’s Cultural and Social Society in Khalidya, the UNDP local partner, and included many participants in related fields to this important issue of national development.

The Economic Development Unit, also known as an Entrepreneur Incubator, is designed to support Kuwaiti women to establish and manage their own micro, small and medium-sized businesses. The Incubator provides the physical infrastructure required to establish a small business, through the refurbishment of the premises in South Surra, and supports the development of the technical skills and expertise the entrepreneurs will need to launch, manage and develop sustainable businesses.
