On August 12 Kuwait – along with the rest of the world – celebrated International Youth Day at a small ceremony at the National Library of Kuwait. Among those in attendance was Minister of Information and Minister of State for Youth Affairs Sheikh Salman Al Sabah, who reaffirmed Kuwait’s desire to give the youth a greater role in society.

UNDP Kuwait hosted recently a five-day workshop for the winners of the Sheikh Mubarak Al Hamad Al Sabah Award for Journalistic Excellence, which was initiated by UNDP Kuwait’s Programme Analyst Huda AlDakheel at the request of the Sheikh Mubarak Awards Committee in order to assist a number of award-winning journalists in advancing the nature of their work and building their capacity to motivate and stimulate their commitment to improving the role of media in Kuwait, especially when addressing national and key development issues.

In 2012, the Government of the State of Kuwait agreed to support United Nations activities through the direct funding of 10 Junior Professional Officer (JPOs) posts. After a rigorous selection process, 10 young Kuwaitis were deployed to UNDP offices in duty stations including New York, Barbados, Copenhagen and Istanbul. Several months into their assignments, the JPOs have already experienced new challenges and the excitement of creating a new professional life for themselves in diverse surroundings.

The State of Kuwait plays a significant and leading role amongst Arab States in terms of awareness, advocacy and recognition of disabilities and inclusion and in 1996, a “Disability Law” was officially passed which paved the way for the creation of “The Higher Council for the Disabled Affairs (HCDA)”. There are currently 27,000 registered persons with disabilities in Kuwait benefiting from a diverse range of benefits and services that guarantee their inclusion as well as positive contribution to the Kuwaiti society.
