2nd Annual International Museum Day

17 May 2014

In accordance with the International Council of Museums, Dar al-Athar al-Islamiyyah – in partnership with UNDP Kuwait – held its 2nd annual International Museum Day on May 17th, marking the day through several activities and events that spotlighted the role of museums in the realms of education, culture and media.

The theme of International Museum Day this year was ‘Museum collections make connections.’

“As the world moves away from traditional methods of engagement, museums must find new ways to engage with their communities by making their collections more accessible and relevant. This theme demonstrates how museum exhibitions have the ability not only to tell a story, but to also engage with the community through shared memory. It also encourages public awareness of the role of museums in the development of society and promotes the connection that exists between different types of collections and their audiences,” announced DAI.

Through their theme, DAI both connected with their patrons and exhibitions, as well as reached out to the community by inviting local museums, businesses and entrepreneurs to participate.

Among the various activities for the whole family to enjoy were an outdoor market (Souq Qibla), where local SMEs sold and promoted their goods and services; children’s activities, including workshops, crafts and theatre plays; an interactive photo booth; a graffiti wall; workshops for all ages on a variety of topics, including but not limited to crafts, henna, calligraphy and box art; and a live, 18-piece brass orchestra.

UNDP’s participation came by way of a women’s incubator, the first of its kind in Kuwait. The UNDP Women’s Economic Empowerment Project – Boutique 33 –incorporated successful women’s initiatives, showing the resiliency of the women involved, all self-motivating and encouraging. By incorporating the idea of equal gender entrepreneurship and participating in the event, these women led by example and were an inspiration for all.

Mr. Ahmad Al Najada of Dar al Athar al Islamiyyah reiterates the partnership between DAI and the UNDP by stating, “I would like to thank you for your very generous sponsorship and participation during our 2nd Annual International Museum Day. Because of you our event was not only successful, but also sent a wave of excitement and appreciation for art, culture and education throughout Kuwait.

This event was easily the crowning glory of our entire cultural season and would not have been possible without your hard work and dedication.

We appreciate your thoughtfulness and approachability when we first started planning International Museum Day, but most importantly we appreciate you taking the time and effort from your busy schedules to make our event a success.
As you know the theme of this year’s event was ‘Museum collections make connections’, and we delivered on that promise ten-fold by making connections all throughout Kuwait and building bridges with new patrons and supporters that we will continue to nurture and foster in the coming years.”
