Media training for award-winning journalists at UN House

UNDP Kuwait hosted recently a five-day workshop for the winners of the Sheikh Mubarak Al Hamad Al Sabah Award for Journalistic Excellence, which was initiated by UNDP Kuwait’s Programme Analyst Huda AlDakheel at the request of the Sheikh Mubarak Awards Committee in order to assist a number of award-winning journalists in advancing the nature of their work and building their capacity to motivate and stimulate their commitment to improving the role of media in Kuwait, especially when addressing national and key development issues. The comprehensive, theoretical and practical training workshop was conducted by journalist, filmmaker and screenwriter Hanan Hamdan, as well as Dr. Abdullah Al Saafin, media consultant and trainer, both whom have had long journalistic experiences as reporters and editorial supervisors. They eagerly dedicated the time and effort to teach the young journalists key methods for pursuing difficult stories and verifying facts. They were engaging, charming and enthusiastic in their presentations and lectures.

The training workshop, which was held from May 23 – May 27 at the UN House, was organized by the Thomson Foundation ( and provided comprehensive training for young Kuwaiti journalists in the fields of core skills in news gathering, reporting, feature writing, editing and other related skills; investigative reporting; conflict prevention reporting; data-derived journalism; and finally, media ethics. Topics such as ‘What is Investigative Journalism’; ‘How to Develop a Hypothesis’; ‘Interviews for Radio/TV’; ‘Organizing and Collecting Data’; and ‘Writing for Print Media’ were among many of the issues that were covered by the trainers.

A final recap and assessment was given to the trainees on the final day of the workshop, followed by a closing ceremony with distribution of certificates. Among those in attendance were Mr. Ayman Al Ali, Chairperson of the Sheikh Mubarak Al Hamad Al Sabah Award for Journalistic Excellence, as well as UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative Dr. Mubasher Riaz Sheikh and Deputy Resident Representative Dima Al Khatib, and staff members of UNDP Kuwait.
