UNDP Kuwait celebrates World Environment Day with Kuwait Oil Company

Jun 4, 2015

On the occasion of World Environment Day 2015, Kuwait Oil Company held an event at their Ahmadi Headquarters to showcase KOC’s support to the local community through its corporate social responsibility programme in the field of environmental sustainability. The United Nations Development Programme Kuwait Country Office was honoured with an award from KOC in recognition of its contribution to and participation in environmental initiatives in Kuwait. The ceremony was hosted by Mr. Hassan Ali Bunain, KOC Deputy Chief Executive Officer, West Kuwait Directorate, and benefitted from the support of the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research and Kuwait University.

Dr. Salem Al-Hajraf, Executive Director of the Energy and Building Research Centre of KISR, gave a presentation on its work on the Shagaya renewable energy plant.  This project is part of Kuwait’s commitment to diversifying its energy resources in accordance with the pledge of His Highness Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah during the UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties in Doha in 2012. In Doha, His Highness the Amir confirmed that Kuwait will generate 1% of its electricity mix from wind and solar power by 2015, and up to 15% by 2030. The first phase of Shagaya Renewable Energy Park is due in 2017 and will eventually produce enough electricity for 100,000 houses.
