UNDP Kuwait sign the project " KEGI" with Environmental Public Authority and GSSCPDJan 16, 2017
On January 16, 2017 United Nations Development Programme signed, with Kuwait Environmental Public Authority and the General Secretariat of the Supreme Council for Planning and Development, a two-year project to support the authority in developing its capacity to meet its obligations under the newly adopted Environmental Framewor
The signing of the Project was in the presence of Secretary General of the Supreme Council for Planning and Development, Dr. Khalid Al-Mahdi, The General Manager of Kuwait Environmental Public Authority, Sheikh/ Abdullah Ahmad Al-Humoud Al-Sabah, and the Resident Coordinator of the United Nations and Resident Representative of the UN Development Programme, Ms. Zineb Touimi-Benjelloun.
During the meeting, the General Manager of Kuwait Environment Public Authority stressed on the importance of this project that will support the authority in very strategic areas such as:
- Kuwait’s participation in Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs) and Internationally Agreed Development Goals (IADGs). An action plan to address constrains and gaps will be developed and national capacity building measures will be undertaken including training sessions on green pillars of the SDGs.
- Designing and implementing of an awareness raising and outreaching programme on important environmental issues through proper media campaigns and workshops.
- Enhancing Kuwait Environment Public Authority’s Environmental Information Systems and the use of Statistics and Indicators for Measuring Environmental Protection Law Compliance to improve use of data and information for decision-making and compliance processes. The project will further promote collaboration between KEPA and the Central Statistical Bureau (CSB).
From his side Dr. Mahdi highlighted the importance of this project, which addresses one of the main pillars of Kuwait’s National Development Plan, and vowed to provide all the support needed to achieve the objectives of this Project.
At the end, Resident Representative of the UN Development Programme, Ms. Zineb Touimi-Benjelloun stressed that all UN development projects in Kuwait are witnessing great support and close cooperation in order to achieve the desired objectives.
