United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki Moon visits Kuwait

Kuwait City, KUWAIT, - The United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon made a brief visit to the State of Kuwait on Sunday to meet with His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah, His Highness the Prime Minister Sheikh Jaber Al-Mubarak Al-Hamad Al-Sabah and First Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah Al Khaled Al Hamad Al Sabah.

He also met with UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative Zineb Touimi-Benjelloun at Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah building (The United Nations House) in a town hall meeting, greeting United Nations Country team staff and focusing on addressing the complex, interdependent challenges of sustainable development. He reiterated the UN system’s need to be better at joining up its efforts and pooling its expertise and resources to do so.

Ban Ki Moon said “I am delighted that the Kuwaiti leadership has strongly supported the SDGs both at home and abroad and that Kuwait has begun the process of aligning its national development plan with the SDGs.”

The visit concluded with the meeting with First Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah Al Khaled Al Hamad Al Sabah which was attended by the special envoy of the Secretary-General of the United Nations to Yemen Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed. The Kuwaiti Minister extolled Ban Ki-moon’s efforts on at regional and international levels, and his support for security and stability in the region to meet challenges at all levels.

Meanwhile, the UN Secretary General emphasized the important role played by Kuwait at the international level. He also praised the prominent contributions of Kuwait in support of the United Nations’ humanitarian and development work and activities around the world.
