UN Day 2017

Oct 26, 2017

At 10:00 am on Tuesday, October 24, the United Nations Day ceremony was held at the Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah Building - United Nations Building. The purpose of this event was to highlight Kuwait's contributions towards building international partnerships to promote the implementation of the 2030 (Sustainable Development Goals) agenda, focusing on the three most important aspects of Kuwait's experience and history in this area: (i) cooperation in international development work; and (iii) Kuwait's contribution to United Nations activity, including Kuwait's recent election to the Security Council.

By reviewing these topics, this event provided an opportunity to showcase existing partnerships between the United Nations and Kuwait in supporting the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

"I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Kuwait on this proactive approach, especially to commend it for setting up in July this year a National Commission on Sustainable Development and Sustainable Development Goals, which will oversee the implementation, monitoring and review process," said UN Resident Coordinator Zeinab Touimi Benjelloun.

This national commission, which is overseen by the General Secretariat of the Supreme Council for Planning and Development, is a very important mechanism for involving all key stakeholders such as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Central Administration of Statistics and will play a key role in ensuring that the State of Kuwait is achieving the SDGs and to inform the international community of its best practice in addressing the development challenges in accordance with the aspirations of the vision of the State of Kuwait in 2035 set by His Highness the Amir and the Kuwaiti National Development Plan.

This ceremony aims to raise awareness and support the importance of partnership and work together in implementing Agenda 2030. On the occasion of United Nations Day 2017, the Secretary-General of the United Nations Antonio Gutierrez said, "Our world faces many serious challenges, including: Conflict and inequality, Climatic climates and deadly intolerance, Security threats, including nuclear weapons. We have the tools and wealth to overcome these challenges. All we need is will. The world's problems go beyond borders, we must overcome our differences until we change our future. When we believe in the human rights and human dignity of all people, they will build a peaceful, sustainable and just world.

On United Nations Day, let us, the people, turn this dream into reality
